Travertine

Travertine refers to rocks formed from the deposition of calcareous mineral springs. It looks like marble, but is inferior to it in strength and some other characteristics. The most extensive deposits of travertine are located in Egypt, Italy, Russia, and Turkey.

Travertine is often called “young marble”. It has a medium-grained structure and can change its color and density in the air: its colors become brighter as a result of the oxidation of iron salts, and its density and hardness increase due to the conversion of calcium bicarbonate to calcium carbonate.

Despite the porosity and high water permeability, the properties of travertine, such as strength and frost resistance, allow it to be used in the interior and exterior decoration of buildings.
